Make Cleaning Easier With These 6 Items

As a homemaker I spend a good portion of my day cleaning. Some tasks will never be easy to me, like doing dishes, but others I have found to be some what enjoyable. Along with taking my own advice on 20 Ways to Enjoy Housework, I have found a few gadgets and gizmos that help make cleaning easier.

As I share with you some of these things, please keep in mind I am not endorsing any specific brand, or product. I highly recommend you take the time to do your own research on what products will work best for you and your household.

Doing Research

It’s important to take the time to research anything that you may be spending money on for your home.

Here are a few key things to keep in mind as you do so:

  • Price – What can you afford at this time, and how can you save up for it, if you need to?
  • Your needs –What is it that you need this specific item for? Don’t buy something just because someone else finds it useful. Get it because you need it for your home.
  • Use – How often will you actually use it? If it’s not a lot, is it still worth investing in?
  • Clean-ability– Can it be taken apart to be cleaned? You shouldn’t invest in something to clean your home, if it itself cannot be cleaned. I have gone through too many humidifiers that gathered dirt and mold because they couldn’t be cleaned properly.
  • Space – Are you willing to give up the space needed to store the item? I know the difficulties of living in a small space, and sometimes we just have to go without certain things because we don’t have the room for it. If space is an issue, try looking for more compact versions of the product.

For example: When looking for a new vacuum cleaner, I didn’t have a large budget for it. We weren’t planning on having any pets at the time, and we mainly had throw rugs, so I didn’t need much power. I was able to sacrifice power for a better price. Unfortunately, it isn’t super easy to get clean, but it gets the job done. And as far as space was concerned, that wasn’t an issue for us, but it does break down to be stored.

#1- A Spray Mop

Spray Mop

A simple spray mop can make cleaning easier by allowing more time in between mopping. Whenever there’s a spill or some muddy footprints, I can just grab it to quickly clean up. The spray mop that I picked out doesn’t take batteries, and has removable pads that can be washed.

#2 – A Cordless Stick Vacuum

Cordless stick vacuum

This is the vacuum I talked about in my example. Not being tied to a cord makes quickly cleaning an area so much easier. It’s light weight which makes taking it out to the car or up and down the stairs less of a struggle. The only downside is remembering to charge it.

#3 – Plenty of Cleaning Rags

Cleaning rags and spray

Having a nice stash of rags on hand not only makes cleaning easier, but saves so much money on paper towels! You can recycle some old clothing to make your own, or pick up some inexpensive bar mops to use. I keep at least enough for a week and a half, so that if I need more than one a day, I don’t have to do extra laundry.

If you’ve read my Mini Refresh about organizing under the kitchen sink, you’ll see that I keep a small basket there to toss my dirty rags into. I empty out that basket once a week and wash the rags for the next week. This is what works best for me.

#4 – A Spot Cleaner

Spot Cleaner

If you have any amount of carpet or upholstery in your home, a spot cleaner is a must! Spills and other messes are inevitable, and often times dabbing it up with a rag isn’t enough. A spot cleaner will help remove messes more thoroughly, saving you the headache of trying to get it up other ways.

We will also use our spot cleaner to clean secondhand furniture and small throw rugs, which is more work, but save us money. Spot cleaning can help cut down on allergens as well, by cleaning your soft furniture once or twice a year.

#5 – Small Trash Cans

Small trash can

This one is a little more cheap and simpler than the others but can be a great help. Have a few small trash cans placed throughout your house so you don’t have to walk all the way to the main trashcan to throw something away.

I like to have one in each bathroom, in our bedroom, the office and my sewing room. Place one anywhere you spend a good amount of time in. So that while you’re working through your home, it’s there when you need it.

You can get creative with this one, and find old baskets, or buckets from thrift stores that you can use!

#6 – A Spin Mop

Spin mop

I use my spray mop regularly but when my floors need a better clean, I really enjoy the ease of using a spin mop. It rings out the excess water with little effort and it’s actually pretty fun to use!

The mop I had before wasn’t easy to clean, so I like the ability my spin mop has to remove the head and wash it. The bucket is a little awkward, so that’s something to consider if you’re looking for one for yourself.

I can easily get excited about any new gadget to make my homemaking easier. But it’s important to find what works best for you. I encourage you to find little ways to make building up your home more delightful!

See you next week!
