Do you feel the crispness in the air? Fall has officially made itself known and it’s time to embrace the cozy fall season!
I’ve noticed that my homemaking changes a little bit with the seasons; in the summer I’m more focused on gardening, jelly making, foraging, and big projects in the house; while in fall, things slow down a bit. My focus will most likely include preparing for the holidays, hunting, canning soups, and lots of baking.
I am someone who tries to enjoy each season as it comes, making the most of it by allowing my lifestyle to adjust as needed. With that in mind here are my top 10 Cozy Fall Homemaking Tips.
#1. Learn to Wake up With the Sun
There is something so calming about waking up when the sun does, and watching the colors change as the sun continues to rise. Waking up a bit earlier, can give you just a little more daylight to work with, and can help you fall asleep when you’re supposed to at night.
#2. Start Your Day With Something Warm to Drink
Along with having something nice to look forward to each day, having something warm to drink can make getting out of bed on chilly mornings slightly easier. I like to start my day with a nice, hot cup of tea, trying a different kind as often as I can.

#3. Pause Mid-Day to Read
Give yourself a break from the day and take some time to read. It doesn’t have to be long, just do what you can. I like to allow myself to slow down in the fall, and this is a great way to do that. Picking up a book (or reading a blog post) instead of scrolling on social media is excellent for your mental health as well.1
#4. Get Dressed for the Day in Something Warm that You can Move Around in
Making sure I get dressed everyday (not in pjs or sweats) helps me to get into the right mindset for starting my day. Whatever you decide to wear for the day, make sure it’ll keep you warm and cozy but also allows you to move around. A lot of my favorite sweaters are too restrictive, and although they’re warm, they can be too heavy, keeping me from getting done what I need to that day.
#5. Use Natural Scents that Remind You of Fall
Run an essential oil defuser to bring in the cozy fall scents (I like Jade Bloom oils for their purity and price). Add some spices, like cinnamon, clove and nutmeg to a pot of simmering water for a cheaper alternative to make the house smell great; just be sure to keep an eye on it!
#6. Open up the Windows and Freshen up the House
If it’s not too rainy or windy out, take the opportunity to open up the windows in your house to let the fresh air in and let the stale air out. Doing this has many benefits including reducing stuffiness, cutting down on condensation, improving oxygen levels in your home, and neutralizing odors. 2 Overall letting some fresh fall air in your home just feels good!
#7. Wear Fuzzy Socks or Slippers
Every year I get myself a pair of new slippers socks to wear around the house when it’s cold out. I’ll put on my regular socks underneath for extra coziness. I also have 2 pairs of slippers for when I need to be wearing shoes in the house, so my feet always stay nice and warm.
#8. Find a New Cozy Hobby or Pick up and Old One.
It’s important to make sure to take time for yourself as a homemaker. As I mentioned earlier, I like to try to slow down in the fall. With more time on my hands, I like to keep busy by doing something I enjoy. You can even use this hobby to make some wonderful gifts for the holidays!
Here are a few ideas:
- Crochet
- Knit
- Bake

#9. Light the Fireplace (real or fake)
Create a cozy atmosphere by lighting a fireplace if you have one or setting up a fake one to enjoy. The soothing colors and sounds can help you to wind down for the evening, and help you get to sleep. Sometimes I like to set one up on my laptop while working on the budget or meal planning.
#10. Cook Warm and Filling Foods
Have fun finding and experimenting with new recipes this cozy fall season! While you’re making your meal plan, focus on cooking foods that will keep you and your family warm and full.
Such as…
- Soups– there are so many to try! Butternut squash, tomato, egg drop, and the classic chicken noodle.
- Casseroles – Stuffed pepper casserole is a favorite of mine.
- Pasta Dishes – spaghetti, Alfredo, Tuscan chicken…
- Use warming spices like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon.
