Making my own custom tea bags is something that I’ve been doing for a long time as it’s convenient and they make great gifts. This is something I enjoy so much and cannot wait to share with you!

I really enjoy a good cup of tea! It is a comfort for me and can be medicine for when I am sick. There’s nothing better than curling up with a hot cup of tea on a rainy day and reading a good book or crocheting and watching TV.

I always have a good selection of teas on hand, but I also like to play around with making my own custom blends; using the flowers or fruits I’ve dehydrated I can make all sorts of different and unique flavors!

To Make the Custom Tea Bags:

Gather Supplies-

To do this you need a few simple things you may already have in your home:

  • Tea of choice
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Spoons -1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, and 1 tsp.
  • Coffee Filters
  • A Stapler
  • Cotton String
The supplies laid out.

Step 1- Prepare the Coffee Filter

This step is not necessary but it does make the final tea bag look nice. If you need a larger tea bag, go ahead and skip this step, the following instructions will still be the same.

  • Start by taking 1 coffee filter and flatten it out as best as you can, it doesn’t need to be completely flat.
Flattened Coffee filter
  • Next fold the bottom of the coffee filter up to the top to fold it in half, like so:
First Fold
  • Fold it in half again to create a triangle shape and cut along the edges to turn that into a square.
Second fold and Cut
  • Once that’s done you should be able to open up your coffee filter and it is now a square!

Step 2- Fill Your Tea Bag

  • Your square coffee filter is now you tea bag, lay that out in front of you.
  • Get your tea of choice and measuring spoons ready.
  • Make two piles of tea in your tea bag roughly in the center; however much tea you use will determine how strong your tea will be. I recommend starting with two 1/2 tsp piles for a moderate strength.

For this custom tea bag, I am using black tea and making two 1/2 tsp piles:

Two tea piles

Step 3 – Fold Your Tea Bag

  • Fold the bottom part of your teabag over the tea piles so that it’s a little more than 1/3 of the way over.
Fold up
  • Fold the top of the tea bag down over the tea, folding the bottom part under a little bit.
Fold down
  • Rotate the tea bag 90° and fold it in half. You should now have a little pocket with the fold at the bottom and the opening at the top.
Rotate and fold

Step 4 – Prepare the String

Let’s pause for a moment and get the string ready:

  • Cut a length of your cotton string about 10″.
  • Fold that in half and twist the folded end together by rolling it between your fingers a few times.

That’s pretty much it, it should look something like this, note the end being twisted together:

Prepare the string

Step 5- Finishing

Now that that is out of the way, we can finish the bag.

  • Fold the top corners of the tea bag down in triangles, making a gift tag shape.
  • Place the twisted end of the sting at the top, with the rest of the string facing out.
Fold corners and place the string
  • Holding the string in place, fold down the top twice.
Fold down twice
  • Staple the top of the tea bag closed, and over top of the string.
Staple shut

Now you have your own custom tea bag!

It may take a few tries to get the hang of it but once you do, you’ll be able to whip this up in no time.

Make as many as you’d like and store them in a airtight container, jar or bag.

How to Make Tea Bags

Cut, fill, and fold tea bags from coffee filters to make your own custom teas!
Author: Samantha

Equipment

  • Tea of Choice
  • 1 Pair of Scissors
  • Measuring Spoons -¼ tsp, ½ tsp, 1 tsp.
  • Coffee Filters -one per tea bag you plan to make
  • 1 Stapler
  • 10" Pieces of Cotton String -one per tea bag.

Instructions

  • Flatten out one of the coffee filters.
  • Fold up the bottom to meet the top.
  • Fold in half again to create a triangle shape.
  • Cut the side of the triangle off to make a square.
  • Open the coffee filter back up, it should now be a square. This is now a prepared tea bag.
  • To fill the tea bag: make two small piles of tea towards the center of the bag.
However much tea you use, will determined it's strength. Start with 1 tsp of tea, split into two ½ tsp piles.
  • Fold the tea bag into thirds by folding up the bottom ⅓ the way, and then folding the top down over that bottom fold.
  • Rotate the tea bag 90° and fold it in half, with the fold at the bottom, an the opening at the top.
  • Take one of the cotton strings, fold it in half and twist the fold together. This will help keep the string together while attaching it to the bag.
  • Fold the top corners of the tea bag down, into a gift tag shape.
  • Place the twisted string onto the top of the tea bag with the untwisted side facing out.
  • Hold the string in place and fold the top of the tea bag down with the string inside.
  • Fold the top down once more.
  • Staple the top in place, making sure to catch the string in the staple.
  • Add a tag or label to the other end of the string if you would like.

*Multi-flora rose hips are much smaller than common garden rose hips but both can be used in this recipe. Use half to a whole regular rose hip in place of the multi-flora rose hips.
