What is homemaking?
One dictionary definition of a homemaker is: “a person who spends their time looking after a home and doing housework rather than being employed outside the home (typically applied to a woman).” Although this definition is true, it only scratches the surface of what a homemaker is and what we do. We are responsible a large variety of things from cooking, to cleaning, to canning, to managing budgets and schedules. A lot of our time is spent managing our homes to make things run as smoothly as possible, and we put a lot of effort into making our homes feel comforting and peaceful. Being a homemaker is a trade that holds value, even in today’s world, and should not be lost in all of the chaos. Homemaking is going to mean something different to everyone as we all have different needs and abilities. It’s not something you can perfect over night, but it’s a style of life that you build on over time.
A little about me
Hi, my names Samantha, and I share tips and experiences as a full time homemaker, without kids, from a Godly woman’s point of view. I’ve always been fascinated in homemaking and my dream became a reality when I married my husband in 2019. I feel truly blessed to be able to be a homemaker in today’s world, it’s definitely challenging but has been possible for us through Gods provision and guidance. I find joy in being a homemaker and along with that I use my talents as a seamstress to make a little extra income on the side by doing small sewing jobs for friends and family. When I’m not working on a sewing job or in my home, I enjoy being out in the forest with my husband squirrel hunting, foraging, and enjoying God’s creation. I also enjoy finding all kinds of creative outlets; often times you will find me crocheting, knitting, embroidering, or writing in my journal. I believe that being creative takes a big part in homemaking, and you will see all of these things and more crossover into my homemaking journey!
Building up a home with delight.
Our homes don’t have to be picture perfect, but as homemakers it’s our job to keep the home functioning and create a comforting atmosphere. I believe that both men and women can benefit from homemaking skills, but I also believe that women play a crucial role in building up the home. Proverbs 14:1 says it perfectly: “The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands.” Whatever we do in life, as women, we have the ability to build up or tear down our homes. We can decide to let our homes be run by chaos, or we can delight in building up our homes and bringing structure. This is done by the way we speak, act, and the effort we put into turning our houses/apartments (or bedroom) into a home, not just a place in which we live.
Being a homemaker is not an easy job; our days are long and we rarely ever get a full day off, but it’s something that brings me so much joy. I take delight in all of the little things that comes with homemaking: filling my house with the smell of fresh baked goods, hearing the pop of a jar sealing as I pull it out of the canner, the warm glow of a candle I lit to make the room cozier… They are like little rewards scattered throughout the day for all of the work and effort I put into my home. Of course there are bigger benefits to homemaking, but slowing down to enjoy the small things can feel like a huge reward to me. I hope that I can use this platform to share a piece of my life with you and that through that, you can be encouraged to build up your home, little by little and take delight in it.
