{"id":788,"date":"2024-05-23T14:28:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T18:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.wordpress.com\/?p=788"},"modified":"2025-01-20T21:59:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T21:59:49","slug":"how-to-clean-and-care-for-wooden-utensils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/?p=788","title":{"rendered":"How to Clean and Care for Wooden Utensils"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today we are going to learn two different methods to cleaning wooden utensils, and how to care for them so that they last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<a href=\"#wprm-recipe-container-1862\" data-recipe=\"1862\" style=\"color: #333333;\" class=\"wprm-recipe-jump wprm-recipe-link wprm-jump-to-recipe-shortcode wprm-block-text-normal\">Jump to Recipe<\/a>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:58px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Use Wooden Utensils?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wooden utensils are strong and gentle<\/strong>, they won&#8217;t scratch your nonstick pots and pans, and they stay cool to the touch while using them. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They are non-reactive<\/strong>, so they won&#8217;t react to your food, leaving a metallic taste like a metal spoon can.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Naturally resist bacteria and mold<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They&#8217;re eye appealing<\/strong>, and look so nice in the kitchen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\">As much as I enjoy cooking with my wooden utensils, they&#8217;re not perfect. They do need a little extra care than other utensils and they have the tendency to hold stains and odor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\">Unfortunately, I have never deep cleaned or sanitized my wooden utensils, I didn&#8217;t really know it was important until recently, and I&#8217;ve had these for about 4 years or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\"> Learning how to clean something new can be a bit daunting, so I found a bunch of different methods and combined a few to give me 2 methods to try with you today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We&#8217;ll call these methods the scrub method and the soak method.<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large care<\/strong><sup data-fn=\"e630ee3c-b1c6-434a-aa10-759583210156\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"e630ee3c-b1c6-434a-aa10-759583210156-link\" href=\"#e630ee3c-b1c6-434a-aa10-759583210156\">1<\/a><\/sup><strong>:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Do rinse your wooden utensil immediately after use, <\/strong>this helps prevent the build up of odor and grease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Don&#8217;t Let you wooden utensil soak too long<\/strong>, they can crack and split if left too long in water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Don&#8217;t dish wash your wooden utensils<\/strong>, this can cause them to swell and split like when soaking them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Do condition them<\/strong> if they dry out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"wp-element-caption\">Before Cleaning and Conditioning <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The first method I tried is the scrub method.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You will need:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Wooden utensils.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>A sink or 13\u00d79 pan.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Baking soda.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Salt<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>1\/2 a lemon or lemon juice and a rag.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>White Vinegar.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Warm water.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instructions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Starting with clean, dry utensils, place your utensils in a plugged sink or in a 13\u00d79 pan. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mix equal parts of baking soda and salt. I used 1\/4 c. of each and only used about half of the mixture in this experiment, you may need to adjust the amount if you have more or less utensils to clean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Coat the utensils with the baking soda mixture and let it set for 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2-3.png?w=1024\" alt=\"Deodorizing utesnsils\" class=\"wp-image-803\" style=\"width:582px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After the 30 minutes, take 1\/2 a lemon or some lemon juice and a rag to start scrubbing your utensils: squeeze your lemon or pour a little juice over the utensil to create a paste with the baking soda mixture and scrub in small circular motions.- I notice some dirt coming off in this step. It seemed to get more of the build up off and lightened them up a little more. Both methods did well deodorizing but the scrub method seemed to have done a better job there as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conditioning your Wooden Utensils<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"910\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/8-910x1024.png\" alt=\"Wooden utensils in crock\" class=\"wp-image-1884 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/8-910x1024.png 910w, https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/8-267x300.png 267w, https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/8-768x864.png 768w, https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/8-53x60.png 53w, https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/8.png 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 910px) 100vw, 910px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Wooden utensils do dry out from time to time so to help keep them from becoming brittle, it&#8217;s a good idea to condition them as needed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For this you will need: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Some type of food safe wood conditioner<\/strong>-They make wood conditioners you can buy or you can use mineral, walnut, or coconut oil, or even bees wax. For today&#8217;s experiment I&#8217;m using food grade mineral oil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Clean and dry wooden utensils.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A<strong> rag or paper towel.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instructions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Star with your clean and dry utensils.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Pour a little mineral oil onto a rag or paper towel, and rub it over your utensils in a small, circular motions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Let the first layer  of oil soak for 15 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After 15 minutes, check to see if you think they need any more oil.- I applied 1 more coat but if they are very dry and old you may need to reapply small amounts of oil over a few days to prevent sudden absorption and expansion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Wipe off the excess oil and put the utensils away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large
