I don&#8217;t know what it is about pillows and pillow cases that&nbsp; seems like no matter how often you wash them, build up is inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There are a lot of different methods to whiten pillow cases and sheets, and if you&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.com\/?p=788\">read my post on cleaning wooden utensils<\/a>, you&#8217;ll know that I like to experiment with different ways to do things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"> I only have 2 pillow cases to do so I narrowed it down to 2 methods to try with you today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I want to note that in my experiment, I did not wash these two pillow cases together, as I didn&#8217;t want to mix the vinegar in method one with the hydrogen peroxide in method two.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Method One: Baking Soda and Dish Soap.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Supplies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Something heat safe to soak your pillow cases in, a dish pan, bucket, or bowl.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A Wooden Spoon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">4 cups of Hot Water, plus more to cover the pillow cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">1\/4 cup Baking Soda (Per pillow Case).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">1\/8 cup Dish Soap (Per Pillow Case).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">1-2 cups White Vinegar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Your Washing Machine and Regular Detergent. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/method-1-supplies.png?w=1024\" alt=\"Method one: ingredients and supplies\" class=\"wp-image-1060\" style=\"width:592px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a heat safe container, add 4 cups of hot water, the baking soda, and the dish soap. Lightly stir together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Submerge your pillow cases in the mixture, and add in more hot water until completely covered. You may need to place something heavy on top, like plate, to weigh down the pillow case so that it is completely covered with water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Set aside and let soak overnight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ahomemakersworkmanship.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/method-1-mixed-up.png?w=1024\" alt=\"Soaking the pillow case\" class=\"wp-image-1062\" style=\"width:504px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You can see, it&#8217;s already working!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The next morning, rinse out the pillow cases with cool water. Wash using a small amount (depending on how many you are washing) of your regular laundry detergent and 1-2 cups of white vinegar. They were both really easy to do and I already had all of the ingredients on hand, but if I didn&#8217;t, it would be inexpensive to buy them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Yellowing can be caused by wet hair, sweat, oils, or beauty products building up on your pillow cases throughout the night.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Shower before bed.<\/strong> Making sure you have a clean head can significantly reduce the amount of oil build up on your pillow cases that can cause the yellowing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Make sure your hair is dry. <\/strong>Since moister in general can cause your pillow cases to yellow, making sure your hair is dry and clean, will help to prevent that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Avoid getting beauty products on them.<\/strong> Using a night cap or bonnet is not only healthy for your hair but can keep any products you use off of your pillow.<sup data-fn=\"e94f1d2e-3545-4624-a514-1e154ad968dd\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"e94f1d2e-3545-4624-a514-1e154ad968dd-link\" href=\"#e94f1d2e-3545-4624-a514-1e154ad968dd\">1<\/a><\/sup> Also allow any lotions or creams to dry before going to bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Wash them regularly.<\/strong> Sheets and pillow cases should be changed out at least every two weeks, more if you have oily skin or sweat a lot at night.<sup Although you are rinsing your pillow cases, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar mixed creates peracetic acid, which can be toxic.<\/span><div class=\"wprm-spacer\"><\/div>\n<span style=\"display: block;\">Both of these methods work wonderfully, although I did prefer method two, when comparing the pillow cases side by side.<\/span><div class=\"wprm-spacer\"><\/div>\n<span style=\"display: block;\"><strong>Tips for avoiding yellow pillow cases:<\/strong><\/span><div class=\"wprm-spacer\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Shower before bed. <\/li>\n<li>Make sure your hair is dry.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid getting beauty products on them. <\/li>\n<li>Wash them regularly.<\/li>\n<li>Add some washing soda when you wash them, and wash in hot water.
